Proof-of-loss deadlines: find the rule before the date
The deadline may come from your policy, a carrier request, or disaster-specific guidance.
ClaimOtter is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. This guide does not determine your rights, deadlines, coverage, or claim value.
01
There is no safe universal number
A proof-of-loss deadline can depend on the policy, claim type, jurisdiction, and any written extension. A generic internet deadline should never override the actual documents controlling your claim.
02
Where to look
Create a deadline record only after you can identify its source.
- The policy's duties-after-loss and proof-of-loss sections
- Letters from the insurer requesting a sworn proof
- Endorsements that change the base policy
- Written extensions or regulator disaster notices
03
Preserve the submission record
Keep the signed version, every attachment, the delivery method, timestamp, recipient, and confirmation. If the date is unclear or close, ask a licensed attorney in your state promptly.
